Students protest against lathicharge

ONGOLE: Students boycotted colleges here on Saturday to protest against the police lathicharge against students agitating against semester system at Tirupati on Friday.

Tension gripped C.S.R. Sarma College where police reportedly roughed up Progressive Democratic Students Union leader G. Sreenivas while dispersing the agitating students.

Progresssive Youth League, Progressive Organisation for Women and All India Kisan Mazdoor Sangh condemned the behaviour of the police.

They pointed out that even though the students were staging peaceful dharna, the police behaved high-handedly.

They opposed posting of a police picket in Sarma college and demanded action against Sub Inspector of Police Sreenivasa Rao, for allegedly manhandling the student leader.

ELURU: The activists of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad on Saturday burnt the effigy of K.C. Reddy, Chairman of Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education, at Vasanta Mahal centre here in protest against the caning of striking students at Tirupati against the Government's move to tinker with the present three-year degree system.

Earlier, the protesters took out a rally raising slogans against the Government.

The ABVP activists expressed their strong opposition to the Government's proposal for introducing four-year degree and semester system.
