Students gherao SVU College principal

Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI: The stand-off between the SV University College authorities and students over the release of hall tickets today took a serious turn with the latter allegedly gheraoing the Principal, J. Lakshmana Rao, the Vice-Principal and other officials of the college for over an hour.

What triggered the row was withholding of hall tickets by the college authorities of students who had not cleared their college and hostel dues.

Students warned

The College Principal, in a press release, said that Rs.63 lakhs, including Rs.22 lakhs payable by the final year students, was outstanding as unpaid despite repeated `warnings' given to the students concerned during the last six months.

He also said that individual letters had been despatched to their parents/guardians asking them to clear the arrears which was also was of no avail.

The unpaid dues had brought things to such a pass that the college authorities had decided that they could no longer run the hostel, as they could not clear the groceries bill for the last two months. But the students took exception to the authorities linking up the hall tickets issue to the payment of due and launched a stir.

Decision defended

Mr. Lakshmana Rao, however, defended the `hard decision' and claimed that the decision, in fact, had paid dividends with nearly 50 per cent of the students had clearing their arrears in the last two days and collected their hall-tickets. He said the college wanted to put the record straight by explaining the position to the public and the media through the press release.
