Students allege extortion

Cases booked against four persons; police on lookout for them

VIJAYAWADA: Students of Andhra Loyola College protested against alleged extortion by four persons at a phone booth opposite their college on Thursday.

They complained that Srinu, a relative of the booth owner, and three others had beaten up a B.Com student Paladugu Venkata Rao on Wednesday night. When Rao had tried to make a phone call at the coin box of TATA Indicom, Srinu had allegedly threatened him and accused him of misusing the coin box to make long distance calls without making payment. He had allegedly stripped Rao and made him sit there till the latter arranged to pay Rs. 400. Srinu was stated to be using this trick on students coming to the booth alone.

The hostel authorities came to know that the gang extorted money from one Ch. Praveen, a B.Com student.On Thursday also, another student was threatened.

The Machavaram police registered a case against the four. and launched efforts to arrest the accused. The college authorities took the case to the notice of Police Commissioner Umesh Sharraf.
