Stalemate in Congress continues

Selection of mayoral candidate for Karimnagar

KARIMNAGAR: A stalemate continues in the Congress over the selection of the mayoral candidate for the Karimnagar municipal corporation even after the MIM had announced its support to the Congress party.

Following the MIM putting forth the demands of selecting the Congress leader D Shankar as the mayor candidate, and demanding the deputy mayor post and three co-option members for the MIM for extending support, the Congress party's mayoral aspirants, including the former legislator, K Satyanarayana Goud, and senior Congress leader, M Rajender, were surprised.

MSR's intervention

In order to sort out the crisis, the Minister for Sports and Culture, M Satyanarayan Rao, swung into action on Thursday and convened a meeting with all the 13 corporators-elect of the Congress party and some independents at the residence of ZP chairman, K V Rajeshwara Rao. The Congress leaders also discussed with the district MIM leaders about the candidate for the Mayor post, but did not disclose the outcome of the meeting.

With a majority of party leaders favouring the candidature of M Rajender for the Mayor's post, the former legislator, K Satyanarayana Goud, abstained from the meeting and is holding a separate camp with his independent supporters and is busy lobbying for securing the coveted post in Hyderabad by using his good offices in the Chief Minister's office.

Minister confident

The Minister for Sports, M Satyanarayana Rao, said that the Congress candidate would attain the Mayor's post but did not disclose the name of the candidate. He was confident of the MIM's support to the Congress.

Asked about the MIM demands for extending support, he said that the MIM had requested the deputy mayor post and also three co-option members in the corporation. There was no mention of the candidate for the Mayor as reported in a section of media, he added. Congress leaders feel that the situation would be sorted out amicably with the selection of candidate acceptable to all by Friday morning before the election of mayor.

TDP wooing MIM

On the other hand, the TDP mayoral candidate, Gangula Kamalakar, is making all out efforts to attain the post with the support of the MIM and independents. Already, he is organising a separate camp with the independents in Hyderabad. The TDP is also planning to split the MIM by securing some candidates' support in the election by offering them `sops'.

The party position in Karimnagar corporation: TDP 15, the Congress 13, MIM 9, independents 10, BJP two and TRS one.
