Hyderabad: The picturesque Hussainsagar lake was a beehive of activity on Monday as sailors from different parts of the country launched their craft into the waters for some much needed practice ahead of the Hyderabad Sailing Week.

This championship is conducted every monsoon when the winds are at their strongest and the conditions ideal for good sailing. Some of India's top sailors representing leading clubs from Mumbai, Pune, Goa, Chennai and the twin cities, test their skills in various classes of boats and categories including wind surfing.

Many of the stalwarts of the sport first made a mark on the waters of Hussainsagar. They include C.R. Pradipak, Rajesh Chaudhary, R. Mahesh and Kelly Rao.

The Laser Class Association of India (LCAI), the EME Sailing Association, Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME) and the Secunderabad Sailing Club, usually ensure that the event is conducted with perfect precision. Over the years the regatta has built up a reputation as one of the best-conducted meets in the sporting calendar of the twin cities.

In this year's championship Arjun Pradipak, Anirudh Vijay Kumar, G. Sandeep, Dinesh Boorugu and Nagesh Boorugu are among the local sailors to watch out for.
