`Sloppy facilities at ration card centres'

Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: Arrangements made at the centres for issuing new ration cards were inadequate and the staff not punctual, according to the Bharatiya Janata Party's city committee.

A team of BJP office-bearers, comprising S.V.S. Prakash Reddy, N. Venkateswara Reddy, K. Sambamurthy, Vegi Mahesh, K. Venugopal and others, went round the ration cards distribution centres in Railway New Colony, Akkayyapalem, Thatichetlapalem, Kancharapalem, Gnanapuram, Madhavadhara, Allipuram and other areas on Wednesday to enquire about the problems being faced by the ration-card holders. Though the centres are supposed to start functioning from 9 a.m., the staff were not present even at 9.45 a.m., the BJP leaders said. The number of counters at each centre was less, leading to delay in the receipt of applications. The applicants were also finding it inconvenient as the applications were in English. They were forced to take the help of others to fill the applications and pay some `service charges' also in the bargain.

The details about the centres opened in a ward and the information about extending the time should be made known to the public through the media, the BJP leaders felt.
