Sahitya Parishat centenary celebrated

People from different walks of life participated in the centenary celebrations of the Andhra Sahitya Parishat that was celebrated at the Archeological Department's museum here on Tuesday.

Observing that valuable palm scripts, manuscripts and rare titles of the Parishat were not being protected properly, as the museum was housed in an old building, Additional Joint Collector B. Rama Rao, chief guest of the function, announced that a new building would be constructed for the museum very soon.

Recalling the past glory of the Andhra Sahitya Parishat, Mr. Rama Rao said that residents of Kakinada city were fortunate enough to have rich cultural heritage in the form of the Parishat that was launched at a time when the renaissance movement was at its peak in the State.

He recalled that writers and research scholars from many places used to visit the Parishat for reference books.

He said that it was the responsibility of every citizen to protect the treasure trove belonged to the Parishat, Mr. Rama Rao announced that he would contribute his might for the uplift of the museum.

Assistant Director of the Archeology Department I.D.V. Prasad Babu said that a sum of Rs. 2.5 crore would be released from the 13th Finance Commission funds for the construction of the new building.

He said that the construction works would be commenced next month positively. Director of the department P. Chenna Reddy, who could not make it to participate in the function, sent his message in which he recalled the past glory of the Parishat and the initiative taken by Jayanthi Ramaiah Panthulu and Pithapuram Raja for establishing the Parishat.

Convener of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage L. Seshu Kumari, correspondent of Ideal group of educational institutions P. Chiranjeevini Kumari, chairman of the Cocanada Chamber of Commerce Dantu Surya Rao, retired lecturer in History K.S. Kameswara Rao and others were present.
