Rs. 1.7 cr worth liquor seized by poll officials

As the campaign by the political parties gains momentum, seizure of huge amounts of cash, liquor and other items meant for distribution among voters as allurements appears to be increasing commensurately.

Police personnel have seized cash of Rs. 25.83 crore till the end of last week, including Rs. 3.44 crore on October 26 alone.

The enforcement authorities have also seized one lakh litres of liquor worth around Rs. 1.7 crore, according to the figures consolidated up to October 29.

Khammam and Nizamabad districts topped the list in seizure of liquor with Khammam accounting for 3,851 litres of liquor worth Rs. 11.69 lakh closely followed by Nizamabad with 7,195 litres of liquor estimated to cost Rs. 11.13 lakh.


More than 2,500 litres of liquor with an estimated market value of Rs. 7.79 lakh was seized in Adilabad and the seizure in Mancherial was 3,382 litres of liquor worth Rs. 10.29 lakh while the State Capital too accounted for 3,683 litres of liquor valued at Rs. 7.19 lakh, according to the report compiled by the election officials.

The officials also seized drugs/narcotics worth Rs. 35.56 lakh, including 104 kgs of gutka valued at Rs. 74,000, on October 26.

Gold and silver articles ostensibly meant for distribution among voters were also seized during the raids and their total value had been pegged at Rs. 1.31 crore.

In addition, other items including laptops, vehicles, cookers and sarees valued at Rs. 29.23 lakh have been seized.

According to sources, the value of these items seized till October 26 was pegged at Rs. 28.12 crore.

Swift action

“The Police Department is acting swiftly on the complaints received and the checks will be intensified further in the coming days,” a senior official of the Chief Electoral Officer’s office told The Hindu .
