Release of water to Krishna delta opposed

KHAMMAM, JULY 24. The Khammam Zilla Parishad general body, which met here today, wanted due priority for the left canal ayacut in release of water from the Nagarjunasagar project.

Members of all political parties opposed the move for release of water to Krishna delta at the cost of the interests of farmers under the NSP canal system.

Resolution adopted

Adopting a resolution to this effect, they wanted the water level in the project be built up to 510 feet before considering release of water either for the left and right canals or the Krishna delta. They pointed out that the Krishna delta was hitherto fed with the water used for power generation in the Nagarjunasagar hydel units.

Farmers in distress

If the demand for release of water to the Krishna delta was considered at this stage without taking the plight of the ayacut under the NSP canal system, it would set a wrong precedent. It would amount to violation of the rights of the farmers in the ayacut of the left canal, they decried.

The rainfall in the district much less than the normal. In May last the rainfall received was only 30.8 mm against the normal of 61 mm.

The rainfall registered in June last was 114.1 mm as against 132. The rainfall in the first three weeks of this month was 161.4 mm as against the normal 314 m.m.

The CPI(M) MLA, Thammineni Vererabhadram, and the Zilla Parishad Chairman, Chanda Lingaiah, Collector, Arvind Kumar were among those who spoke.
