Proper implementation of SC/ST Act sought

VISAKHAPATNAM, DEC. 6. A mammoth rally was organised in the city on Monday to press for proper implementation of the Prevention of Atrocities on SC/ST Act, 1989, on the occasion of the 48th death anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

Thousands participated in the rally, which commenced at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar statue at Dabagardens in the morning and reached the Collectorate via the main thoroughfares. A meeting was held in front of the Collectorate and later a delegation of the struggle committee to demand implementation of the Act submitted a memorandum to the district Collector.


The memorandum listed several incidents of atrocities on Dalits and presented a charter of demands. One of the demands was that the Act should also be applied in the case of police officers found negligent in implementing the Act.

Among other demands were taking up all the cases under the Act and punishing the culprits, licences to Dalits for carrying weapons in accordance with the Act, house-sites and land to Dalits, payment of compensation to Dalits evicted at Pharma city, speedy implementation of Justice Punnaiah Committee recommendations, and setting up vigilance wings to curb atrocities on women, particularly Dalit women and prevention of dowry harassment.

The delegation included chairman of the committee, Palteti Pentarao, convenor, Maturi Chinnarao, co-convenors, Bhagam Gopalarao, K.V. Ramana Rao, Ambati Ramu, Kaila Vidyasagar, Gollapalli Rambabu, Kollabathula Vengala Rao, P.M. Satish Kumar, and others.
