Prisoner escapes; 3 cops suspended

HYDERABAD May 22. The Police Commissioner, M.V. Krishna Rao, suspended a head constable and two constables for allegedly allowing a remand prisoner to escape from Osmania general hospital this morning.

The three policemen -- M.A. Azeem, P. Venkati and Akbar -- were assigned the job of guarding the prisoner, Syed Shah Murtuza Qadri, when he was sent to hospital for treatment on May 19. Qadri was arrested by the Task Force for allegedly killing his friend, Arid, in March. The prisoner was said to have escaped early in the morning due to the negligent behaviour and dereliction of duty by the trio.

On a report submitted by the Joint Commissioner of Police, Mr. Rao issued suspension orders. Departmental proceedings were being initiated against the three, a police spokesman said.
