Peace is the key, YSR tells naxals

HYDERABAD, OCT. 2. Gandhi or Mao. Whom to emulate? Nelson Mandela chose Mao first, opting for armed struggle against apartheid in South Africa, but selected Mahatma Gandhi as his hero finally treading the path of non-violence to achieve his goals. He was successful.

The Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, recalled this at the birth anniversary celebrations of the former Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri, organised by the Government here on Saturday.

He chose the occasion to advise naxalites that "nothing comes through the barrel of the gun, much less power." If the extremists still thought that power would only come through the barrel, they would be subjecting not only themselves but also people to problems. Development would suffer, he said.

Public opinion

He said freedom of expression was available to all citizens and it was for the political parties as also naxalites to influence public opinion and come to power.
