Over 80 huts destroyed in Vizag

VISAKHAPATNAM: As many as 80 huts were gutted and property worth Rs.15 lakhs was destroyed in Chittibabu Colony of Thatichetlapalem in the city on Saturday morning.

Fire from a pump stove in a thatched hut around 8.15 a.m. quickly spread to the entire area, reducing the huts in the vicinity to ashes, according to the police who were the first to know about the accident on number 100 at the control room a few minutes after the fire broke out.

The IV Town police personnel quickly rushed to the spot followed by Rakshak mobile police and fire brigade.

Relief measures

Soon, other officials, including Joint Collector Sandeep Kumar Sultania, and Assistant Commissioner of Police (North) Ranga Reddy arrived on the scene and organised relief.

Police immediately arranged breakfast for 100 children in the colony and shifted the entire lot of over 2,000 men, women and children to the neighbouring Avathar Meherbaba Community Hall, and tents were pitched to provide shelter.

The affected persons were also provided bedsheets, blankets, rice and kerosene.
