Over 300 apply for Congress ticket in Chittoor district

TIRUPATI, MARCH 3. As curtains came down on Wednesday evening on the sale and submission of applications for the Congress ticket in Chittoor district, in all, 299 have applied for 15 Assembly seats and 33 for the Tirupati, Chittoor and Rajampet Lok Sabha seats.

With the clock ticking away for the closing time, the district Congress office in Chittoor became a bee-hive of activity with the last minute entrants scrambling to comply with the formalities. Of the 33 applications received for the three Lok Sahba seats, 20 were for Chittoor, 11 for Tirupati (SC) seat and two for the Rajampet seat. (Of the seven segments coming under the Rajampet LS seat, three segments-- Vayalpadu, Madanapalle and Tamballapalle-- are from the Chittoor district while the remaining four from Cuddapah district).

Among those who applied for the Chittoor Lok Sabha seat are: Ramamurthy Naidu, the brother of the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu. Sources said that rather intriguingly though the former Union Minister, Chintha Mohan, who had represented Tirupati twice in the past is the Congress front-runner for the ticket this time also, there was no application from his side till the closing time.

As for the applications submitted for the Assembly seats, the maximum was for the Sathyavedu (SC) seat -- 54 followed by 51 for Madanapalle seat while the least was for Piler seat -- a lone application from the sitting incumbent and the DCC president, P. Ramachandra Reddy. Interestingly, no fewer than 30 applications were received for the Chandrababu Naidu's Kuppam constituency.
