On a high

The private college managements are riding on a high. After the Supreme Court judgement that virtually took their administration out of the Government's control, came the good news of several relaxations from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) on the land restrictions and intake of polytechnic students.

While the Apex court's decision benefited the urban colleges more, the AICTE relaxations were in favour of rural engineering colleges. Interestingly, the colleges were seeking these benefits for several years but they have come after several legal battles and representations to the authorities concerned. But it remains to be seen whether their pleasure would be short-lived what with political parties and students strongly opposing it.
