: Highlighting the need for creating awareness among the aqua farmers about better management practices and adopting scientific methods to achieving high yields, Collector H. Arun Kumar on Friday said that the twin goals of achieving growth rate in the aqua sector and protecting the environment was possible only through trained aqua farmers.

Addressing the district-level meting to accord permissions to aqua ponds, Mr. Arun Kumar said that aquaculture was playing a crucial role in the primary sector in East Godavari district and there was an immediate need to encourage aqua farmers by way of simplifying the procedures and curtailing the delays in sanctioning the permissions.

Observing that most of the farmers were lacking scientific knowledge in aquaculture, the Collector asked the officials of the Fisheries department conduct field-level programmes and involve all the aqua farmers in the training-cum-awareness sessions.

The meeting received 373 fresh applications from the farmers seeking permission to launch aquaculture, in which permissions were accorded to 266.
