No repoll in Karimnagar district

KARIMNAGAR, APRIL 24. The Superintendent of Police, R.S. Praveen Kumar, has attributed the peaceful conduct of polling in the naxalite- affected Karimnagar district as the victory of people, who believe in peace and development of the region.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Mr. Praveen Kumar said that for first time in the history of Karimnagar district, a re-poll was not necessitated, as the elections passed of peacefully without any violent incident either by naxalites or other elements.

He said that they had made unprecedented security arrangements with the available police forces and ensured peaceful elections. He said that as assured, they did not utilise the services of former militants as human shields during the elections.

Giving details about naxal violence during the elections, he said that in the 1989 elections, there were 42 naxal activities including blasts, killings, etc. In 1991 elections, 39 incidents were reported, in 1994, 30 incidents, in 1996 Parliament elections, there were 41 incidents, while during the Jagtial by elections in 1996, naxalites committed one offence. In 1998 elections, naxalites were involved in 29 incidents.

In 1998, Metpally by elections, naxalites committed five offences including snatching away of weapons from gunmen and attack on the Chief Minister's convoy. In 1999 elections, naxalites had resorted to 27 incidents. However, in 2004 elections, there was not a single offence in the district during the elections. Besides, candidates of all political parties successfully campaigned in the district without any threat from naxalites, he added.

Inspite of poll boycott call, the polling percentage had increased considerably over the years in the district, he pointed out. He also lauded the services of police personnel deployed for poll duty for 25 days in the interior villages. He said that the people of interior villages had extended full cooperation to the police during the elections by extending hospitality.

He also said that they had received feelers from underground naxalites about their surrender very soon.

The Additional SP (administration), P. Sudarshan Reddy, the Karimnagar DSP, Y. Sai Narsa Reddy, the Rural CI, P. Venugopal Rao, the town SIs, A. Mahesh, R. Prakash and others were present.
