NIZAMABAD: Although the total number of road accidents has come down when compared to last year, there is an increase in the number of fatal accidents and deaths in the district the current year.

As many as 1,319 accidents took place this year as against 1,369 last year. Of them, 326 were fatal, in which 360 were killed.

The number of accidental deaths reported last year was 317, according to Superintendent of Police Mahesh Chandra Laddha.

Major setback

There were no incidents of exchange of fire or casualties from the side of police or Maoists during the current year, while 10 Maoists were killed in the exchange of fire in March last year. It may be recalled here that Maoists suffered a major setback after the Manala encounter in which 10 naxalites, including the district committee secretary, were killed.

However, 874 Maoists and four Janashakti naxalites were arrested. It was just 87 and two last year, while 1,013 and two in 2004. Only three Maoists gave in as against 17 last year and one in 2004, the SP said. The police arrested as many as 70 persons by busting 12 notorious gangs. They have also recovered Rs. 6.93 lakhs in cash from them. Manchi Vittal, Palem Rajaiah, Munipati Siva Prasad, Ashilkar Ashok, Wadla Ravi, Pulloori Srinivas, Utnoor Gangadhar, Power Lakshman, Tikkikar Santhose Kumar, Guldhinkhan Patan, Vijayalakshmi Bosle and Nagnath Desai gangs were nabbed.

Mr. Laddha said 95 persons, including three women, were booked and arrested under the Narcotic Drug (Prevention) Supply Act by registering 43 cases. Meanwhile, the number of sorcery cases had gone up to 48 as against 38 last year.
