Dr. Lakshmi Kantam will be the first woman to head a CSIR laboratory

Dr. Mannepalli Lakshmi Kantam, has been appointed as Director of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), the first woman scientist to head any of the 37 laboratories belonging to Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in the country. She assumed charge on Monday.

According to an IICT press release here, she has been bestowed with the assignment for her significant contribution in the field of inorganic and physical chemistry, especially in the area of catalysis and material science. An acclaimed scientist in the areas of catalysis, nano-materials and process chemistry, she has made outstanding contributions towards the development of eco-friendly processes relevant for chemical/ pharmaceutical industries. Dr. Lakshmi Kantam is currently leading an inter-disciplinary team under the ongoing National Solar Mission programme to harness sustainable and renewable energy. She has more than 250 research publications, 43 patents and is on the editorial board of many reputed journals. She is a Fellow of many prestigious academies and is the chairperson for the Women Scientists Scheme.
