Naxals blast 400 kv tower

ONGOLE OCT. 26. Naxalites of the People's War detonated a 400 kv line electric tower near Veerabhadrapuram under Yerragondapalem police limits late last night. Under its impact two metal bars on the tower got snapped and the tower slanted to a side.

According to information reaching here, six naxalites of the Palavanka dalam set off the tower with the detonators around 1 a.m on Sunday. Subsequently, a letter sent to the local scribes of Yerragondapalem in the name of the dalam commander, Bhavani, today said the killing of one of the members of the dalam by the police at Ganjivaripally on Friday morning was barbaric and unjustified. The policemen numbering about 100 surrounded the woman naxalite when she arrived at the river Krishna in the forest for taking bath and showered bullets killing her on the spot, the letter said. The letter said that the Chief Minister, Chandrababu Naidu, was in a state of terrible panic and not able to travel except by helicopter. He had driven scores of farmers and people to commit suicide with his anti-people policies, the letter said.

Talking to The Hindu, the Markapur Additional SP, Manish Kumar Sinha, said luckily there was no power supply in the line connecting Sundipenta and Nunna in Vijayawada when the naxalites triggered the blast. "If the line was live the damage could have been much more." Meanwhile, he said the slain naxalite was identified as Sandhya (23), a member of the Palavanka Local Guerilla Force of the PW.

Explosives seized

Meanwhile, six persons were arrested and a large quantity of explosive material seized by the Anantapur police when it was being clandestinely transported in two tractors to Pathikonda in Kurnool district on Saturday night.

Acting on a tip-off, the police teams intercepted the vehicles near B.K. Samudram and took hold of the explosive material that included 120 kg of ammonium nitrate, 360 detonators and four batteries used for detonation. Further investigation is on.
