VIJAYAWADA: Municipal Commissioner N. Gulzar ordered closure of several chicken and mutton shops located in two municipal corporation markets here on Thursday.

The Commissioner, who made a surprise check, ordered the immediate closure of shops that were not being maintained in a hygienic way. He inspected chicken and mutton shops in Hanumantharaya market, Mahanthi market and Vijaya Hot Foods.

Mr. Gulzar also inspected Ajitsingh Nagar, Payakapuram, Sundaraiahnagar and markets in One Town and Govenorpet areas in the morning. Responding to the problems of overflowing septic tanks in these areas, he said that the tanks should be cleaned at the expense of the residents, but under the supervision of the municipal officials. He said action should be taken against those dumping garbage into drains and those using public thoroughfares for defecation. He said the silt removed from the drains should not be allowed to remain by the roadside and should therefore be lifted on the very same day.
