MP's plea on employment guarantee scheme

WARANGAL: B. Vinod Kumar, MP, has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to link the National Employment Guarantee scheme with the minor irrigation system for better results. In a detailed reported submitted to Mr. Singh, he said that the employment guarantee scheme could be utilised to restore 5,509 tanks, a majority of which were defunct.

If restored, the tanks could irrigate over 1.15 lakh acres additionally in Warangal district. The work would provide some 200 man-days in rural parts for two summers. It would also generate allied employment to scores of people, besides resulting in increase in agricultural production and livestock.

Mr. Vinod Kumar said that the Prime Minister was impressed with the report and assured to send the same to the Ministry of Rural Development for consideration.

He said that he had apprised the Prime Minister that due to non-maintenance of minor irrigation sources, the recent rain resulted in a loss of Rs. 82 crores.
