MLAs put irrigation officials on the mat

Ire over failure to provide adequate info about projects

Staff Reporter

KARIMNAGAR: District legislators, including the Minister for Sports and Culture, M. Satyanarayana Rao, and the Government Whip, D. Sridhar, have expressed their ire against irrigation officials for failing to provide adequate information about the proposed and ongoing major irrigation projects -- SRSP stage-II, SRSP Flood flow canal and the Sripadasagar project (Yellampalli).

The legislators have found fault with irrigation officials for not covering several upland mandals of the district under the ongoing Flood flow canal and the proposed Yellampalli projects. Even though the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, had promised lifting of water to the Upper Manair Dam from the Flood Flow canal or Yellampalli project, there was no mention of it in reports prepared by officials. The legislators alleged that there was no coordination among the three CEs of the projects. They suggested integration of the SRSP Flood Flow Canal and the Yellampalli project and appointment of single CE for both projects for effective utilisation of waters.

High-level meet

The Zilla Parishad chairman, K.V. Rajeshwara Rao, convened a meeting with the Chief Engineers of SRSP, the Flood Flow canal, the Yellampalli projects on Tuesday to get clarifications about the utilisation of river waters. Cutting across party lines, legislators asked irrigation officials to prepare a comprehensive plan for the integration of all the three major irrigation projects to ensure irrigation facilities to each and every village in the district laying emphasis on upland areas.

When Mr. Sridhar wanted to know from officials the extent of land not covered under any irrigation projects, there was no reply. Irked over this, he instructed the officials to be ready with facts and figures.

The Nerella MLA, Kasipeta Lingaiah (TRS), said there was no mention of lifting water to the Upper Manair dam in the proposals prepared by the officials. The Jagtial MLA, T. Jeevan Reddy, flayed the officials for not including his upland Mallial mandal in the Flood flow canal or the Yellampalli project.

Mr. Satynarayana Rao instructed all the three CEs to visit his office on July 14 for a meeting with him as well as other legislators, including the retired SRSP CE and TDP legislator, Sana Maruthi.

The legislators -- Chada Venkat Reddy, K. Eshwar, J. Ratnakara Rao, Ch Rajeshwara Rao, the Collector, C Parthasarathi, and the SRSP Flood flow canal CE, Rahaman, and other officials were present.
