HYDERABAD: Majlis legislators, corporators and party workers staged a dharna near the Nehru Zoological Park here on Tuesday to protest the "growing pollution" threat to residents of the Old City. They demanded immediate shifting of the polluting factories outside the City limits.

The Majlis floor leader in the Assembly, Akbaruddin Owaisi, led the protest. Party legislators, Syed Ahmed Pasha Qadri, Mumtaz Ahmed Khan and Mauzzam Khan staged a sit in demonstration. Banners denouncing pollution were put up all over the place.

A health hazard

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Owaisi said pollution from the oil and rice mills was posing a serious health hazard. People living in and around these factories were affected by TB and other infections.

Ground water was also contaminated in many areas. Black soot coming out from the factory chimneys had become a nuisance in Chandrayangutta, Katedan and Bahadurpura areas.

`Inspect factories'

Mr. Owaisi asked the Pollution Control Board to inspect the factories and take necessary action. He asked the government to either shift the polluting industries or ensure that they adhered to the prescribed guidelines. "If the Government failed to respond, we will intensify the stir," Mr. Owaisi warned.
