Maoist surrenders

VISAKHAPATNAM: A member of the Korukonda dalam of the outlawed CPI (Maoist), Buchchala Bangaraiah Sankar (20), surrendered before the Superintendent of Police V.V. Srinivasa Rao here on Thursday. A native of Gondupalli village of Gudem Kotha Veedhi mandal in Visakhapatnam agency area, Sankar quit studies at the behest of Maoists to join Korukonda dalam.

He was a member of the guerrilla squad. An expert in preparing mines, Sankar was involved in exchanges of fire at Sampangigondi, Kothugondi and Gujjedu during the last three years, he said.

Mr. Srinivasa Rao said that the police department took action as per the law in the case of arrests of underground cadre of Maoists. On Thursday, senior Maoist leader Resu Komaraiah was produced in court, he pointed out. He also said that 36 underground Maoists who surrendered this year were brought into the mainstream by the police. They were being provided immediate rehabilitation, he added.

Girijan reaction

He observed that of late, girijans were opposing violence by Maoists.Mr. Srinivasa Rao also said that the police had always treated girijans with sympathy and added that cases against 250 sympathisers of Maoists were withdrawn this year.
