BHIMAVARAM: The Andhra Pradesh Rytu Sangham (APRS) on Sunday heavily came down on the State government for its reported failure to provide water to the Godavari delta for the ensuing rabi operations.

‘Withdraw GO’

Adopting a resolution to this effect at its second day’s State conference, the APRS attributed the water shortage to the lack of “foresight” on the part of the State government. Releasing the copies of resolutions, APRS president Sarampalli Malla Reddy appealed to the government to drop GO Ms. No. 37, which provided for privatisation of irrigation and drinking water sources in the State.

‘The GO, allegedly intended to pave the way for corporatisation of agriculture, would have serious consequences on the lives of small and medium farmers, he cautioned. The conference expressed its serious concern over the seed sector slipping into the hands of multi national companies, which allegedly led to supply of spurious seed to the farmers.

The State government reportedly remained helpless even as farmers needed 50 lakh tonnes of seed, he said while appealing to the government to take steps to meet the demand of 16 lakh tonnes of fertilizers in the coming rabi.
