‘Programmes to boost research will be launched’

TENALI: Major boost will be given to research work in science and scientific pursuit at the college and school-level through two programmes to be launched by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Allahabad on December 15, leather technologist and Department of Science and Technology Secretary T. Ramasami announced here on Saturday.

There will be one million scholarships given away with a Rs.2,000 crore layout to students in the age group of 10 to 15 years for scientific pursuit provided there were among the top one percent of all State and Central Boards of education, he declared after receiving the prestigeous Dr.Yelavarthi Nayudamma Award-2008 here from Union Minister of State for Human Resource Daggubati Purandhareswari.

These students would be given Rs.5,000 for three years, while 10,000 meritorious Intermediate to M.Sc. level of students would be given Rs.80,000 per year with Rs.20,000 to a mentor during summer attachment programme under the programme named `SHE’.

The investment in the research sector had gone up considerably to .7 per cent of GDP with matching investment from the private sector and hoped that it would phenomenally increase in the days to come.
