‘Maha dharna’ held

VIJAYAWADA: Demanding house sites to the poor, the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the CPI (Marxist) launched a two-day ‘Maha dharna’ at the Sub-Collector’s office here on Thursday. This was a part of the State-wide agitation launched by the two parties. Activists of the two parties gathered at the venue in large numbers and raised slogans against the State Government for failing to provide housing to the poor.

Addressing the activists, Vijayawada West MLA Sk. Nasar Vali alleged that the State Government had totally failed in providing housing to the poor in the cityReferring to the recently inaugurated housing complex at Payakapuram, Mr. Vali said that the Government constructed only 65 houses in the last four-and-half years, against its target of constructing 20,000 houses a year.

Secretary of the All India Democratic Women’s Association’s State unit and member of the CPI (M)’s State committee K. Swarupa Rani found fault with the State Government for allowing liquor shops in every street. City secretaries of the CPI and the CPI (M), K. Subba Raju and R. Raghu, and floor leader of the CPI (M) in the VMC Ch. Babu Rao spoke.
