‘Cancel licence of bar on church premises’

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Executive members of the CSI Krishna-Godavari Diocese on Saturday appealed to the Government to cancel the licence of a bar-cum-restaurant at the CSI Church Compound in Vijayawada.

In a statement here, coordinator of CSI, KG-G Diocese, Karunanidhi, said that the CSI had been objecting to the granting of a licence for a bar to be set up on the premises for long. Accordingly, a memorandum was also submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Excise in Vijayawada on July 28. However, the department renewed the licence on July 31 in favour of the owner of the bar, without permission from the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC).

The premises was leased on August 1, 1986, for the construction of a shopping complex.

The lease deed did not allow the opening of a bar. Besides, it was located in a residential area and surrounded by numerous hospitals. Even Bishop Dyvasirvadam had been participating in the relay hunger strike demanding the scrapping of bar licence for the last three days.
