COVA organises Q & A session with school students

Hyderabad: “Why do parents stop educating the girl child and get her married at a very young age?”

This question was brought up by a class VII student at ‘Bal Adalat’, a question-answer session between school students and various speakers, organised by COVA here on Wednesday.

The question had surprised the speakers, Murali Mohan Reddy, Administrative Officer from National Child Labour Project and E.T. Narasimha, a representative of CPI.

Over a 100 curious young minds shot questions on child rights, child marriage, child labour and conditions of government schools to name a few.

“In some government schools, teachers use mobile phones during class and some of them also eat ‘paan’ and ‘gutka’, is it the right thing to do?” asked Akshit Kumar Agarwal, a student of Sri Saraswathi Gyan Mandir High School.

Overview

While most of the questions were answered in a politically correct manner, students were given an overview of NCLP and its activities and were urged to curb child labour by notifying the authorities concerned if they came across such instances by calling the Helpline- 1098.

“We motivate rescued children to study so that their future is secure.

We keep them in rescue centres and try to get them interested in studies,” said Mr. Murali.

Questions regarding basic amenities in government schools and corporal punishments were also brought up by the children.

“We may come up with such questions but most of the time we are ignored as we are children trying to talk in front of elders,” said Nanda Kishore, a VIII class student.
