“CEC’s action needs explanation”

VISAKHAPATNAM: There are several unanswered questions raised in the wake of Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami’s “recommendation” for the removal of Election Commissioner Navin Chawla, Praja Spandana president C.S. Rao has said. Going by the AIR bulletins that the Government had rejected the suo motu recommendation, he said in a statement here on Sunday, the interpretation of Article 324 required judicial scrutiny because when the Election Commissioners were holding similar status and the CEC was first among equals, there was every scope for such ugly situations to arise.

Stating that there were several unanswered questions, Mr. Rao, a former Indian Economic Service officer, wanted to know why the CEC had kept quiet all the years though allegations against his colleague were known to all.

The CEC was also answerable to voters and political parties to explain what he meant by partisan. “How could both of them with so much of difference of opinion and lack of mutual confidence deliver the goods when the general elections are fast approaching?” Mr. Rao asked.
