Telangana Jagruthi, an organisation working for protection of history and culture of the region, has welcomed the installation of B.R. Ambedkar’s statue on the premises of Legislative Assembly on Monday.

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, its president K. Kavitha said Telangana Jagruthi had been agitating for the last two years with the demand for installation of Ambedkar’s statue in the Assembly stating that it would be a mark of respect to the Constitution-maker and would rekindle the spirit of patriotism among elected representatives in particular and people in general.

She explained how her organisation had taken up the issue by submitting a representation to Assembly Speaker N. Manohar requesting installation of Ambedkar’s statue in December 2011. She stated that they had staged several protests including a 48-hour hunger strike at Indira Park in April 2012 demanding setting up of Ambedkar’s statue in the Assembly. The organisation had also written to all Floor Leaders in the Assembly requesting them to pursue the matter with the Speaker and mount pressure on the government for installation of the statue. She, however, felt that Telangana Jagruthi should have been involved in the unveiling of the statue by the Governor.
