Kapunadu seeks quota

VISAKHAPATNAM, MARCH 24. The district unit of Kapunadu began its phase-wise agitational programme on Thursday to press the pending demands of the community.

A memorandum highlighting their demands was submitted to the district Collector to be forwarded to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

The main demands of Kapus, who claim to have the largest population in the State, are to include the Kapu community in Backward Classes list, implement reservations applicable to BCs for Kapu students in all educational institutions and provide housing for the poor in the community.

Plea to YSR

The memorandum recalled the promise of the Congress before elections that justice would be done to the Kapu community if the party came to power.

``You are aware that a majority of Kapus in Visakhapatnam district are lagging behind in socio-economic aspects.

Kapu men and women are working as agricultural labourers, rickshaw-pullers and maidservants.

Our children are unable to go to school due to poverty,'' the memorandum, signed by several Kapunadu leaders, pointed out and appealed to Dr. Reddy to respond immediately and take measures for the welfare of Kapu community.
