Jail inmate escapes, caught

HYDERABAD Aug. 26. A day after a life convict broke free from the Cherlapally open jail, another convict, A. Ravi, managed to escape from the same jail and was, however, caught at Alwal within eight hours. The guard officer and head warder, Srinivasulu, was suspended, in this connection.

The jail Superintendent, Suneel Kumar, said that Ravi was an ``out-gang member'' and working in the front garden of the jail. Around 3.15 p.m., the head warder asked Ravi to bring water from a tank, which was 150 yards away. Even as Srinivasulu was watching, he allegedly jumped the compound wall and fled.

Search parties were formed and a hut launched for the fugitive immediately. After inquiring about his possible hideouts from another inmate, Krishnamurthy, a team went to east Venkatapuram in Alwal, where Ravi was spotted while coming out of a barber's shop. He was rounded up and brought back to the jail by 9. 45 p.m. The Malkajgiri ACP, Satyanarayana, said a case under section 224 of IPC would be registered against Ravi.

Meanwhile, the Executive Jailor of Cherlapally jail, C. Vijay Kumar, was suspended on the charge of dereliction of duty in connection with the escape of a life convict on Sunday. The Secretary of the Jails Department, A.K. Tigdi, visited the jail on Tuesday and sought details about the prisoner's escape.

Cop suspended: A head constable of the Kachiguda police station, J. Sattaiah, was suspended by the Hyderabad Police Commissioner, M.V. Krishna Rao, on charge of dereliction of duty.

Sattaiah allegedly failed to register a case about a missing two-wheeler despite the vehicle owner, S. Raj Kumar, of Lingampally lodging an oral complaint with him on the intervening night of August 15 and 16, a press release said.
