ISO certificate for RTA Central soon

HYDERABAD May 21. The Road Transport Authority, Central, at Khairatabad will shortly have the distinction of getting ISO 9001:2000 Quality System Standards. The services of the Lloyd's Register of Shipping, London, had been enlisted to ensure the certification.

The ISO 9001:2000 certification will basically mean a shift in the RTA becoming a procedure-oriented agency, rather than the officer-oriented department that it has been in the past, much like most other Government offices.

The Transport Commissioner, A. Giridhar, said the project plan sought to standardise the procedures in Government offices. "We are doing this on a pilot basis at the Central Office, according to the directions of the Government. The motivation for the exercise came from the secretary, IT, J. Satyanarayana,'' he said. As far as ISO certification in this category -- where public transactions take place in Government offices -- is concerned, eSeva is the first and the Transport Department will be the second to get it.

When contacted, the Joint Transport Commissioner, C.L.N. Gandhi said that with ISO certification, the RTA Central would join the select list of Government organisations and departments which possess such a certificate. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and eSeva have a similar distinction.

He said the RTA had decided to go for the ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System with an intent to streamline growth services management and implement mainline and support activity to ensure total customer satisfaction. The certification will mean that audit trials and procedures are standardised and firmly in place, he said.

The phase-wise description of project deliverables include draft procedures, controlled procedures, internal quality auditing, implementation, familiarisation, corrective actions and follow-up. Once the project plan is implemented, the systems will be monitored periodically. This will provide a base for revising the plan in future, depending upon the growth of transactions.

Once the certification is through for RTA Central office, it will be put under the microscope during stage one of the certification phase before similar proposals are mooted for the other four zonal offices of the RTA in Hyderabad, Mr. Gandhi said.
