Contractors' bills to be released only after certification from labour wing

HYDERABAD: The Major Irrigation Department will issue orders releasing contractors' bills only after the labour wing certified that there was no misuse of funds meant for workers' welfare while taking up works. Announcing this in a press release on Saturday, Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah said the stipulation would apply to a bill of over Rs. 20 lakhs or to a work involving 100 workers. The bill would be approved only after the Labour Department issues a certificate on the use of the money for workers' welfare.

The decision was taken after the Minister reviewed the irrigation projects' works. It would come into effect after Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy approved it. The Government had realised that the funds being set apart for workers' welfare were being misused by the contractors.
