Irate villagers stop Speaker's convoy

KADEM (ADILABAD DT.): Villagers of Kotha Pochampad and Bhagyanagar in Nirmal mandal on Thursday stopped the convoy of Assembly Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy demanding enhanced compensation for their lands which were submerged under Sriramsagar Project (SRSP) long ago. The villages were resettlements for oustees of the SRSP on the Nirmal-Mancherial road.

Project renamed

The Speaker, who was proceeding towards Kadem project in connection with its renaming, assured the villagers of all possible help in the matter. He later unveiled a plaque to mark the renaming of the Kadem project as Kadem Narayan Reddy Project after the former MP and popular Congress leader.

At the function, Mr. Suresh Reddy reiterated that all irrigation projects under taken by the Government would be completed in the next two years. He said the completion of these projects would prove the Government's commitment towards the welfare of the farmers. Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Laxmaiah said despite the Government releasing Rs. 21 crores recently for a new canal on the Kadem project, the demand for additional development of the project would be met. He asked the Administrator and Chief Engineer of SRSP to submit a report for increasing the dam's capacity to irrigate and additional 10,000 acres within 15 days.

Social Welfare and district in charge Minister D.S. Redya Naik said once the six new medium irrigation projects in the district were completed, the total ayacut would jump up to 2.7 lakhs hectares in Adilabad.
