The Indian Academy of Paediatrics Srikakulam wing on Tuesday expressed serious concern over ignoring the importance of breastfeeding due to a lack of awareness among mothers.

Association founder K.Someswara Rao and president Dharmana Laxminarayana said that next generation would have health issues if breastfeeding was not paid attention.

Addressing a media conference, they said the association would conduct awareness programmes including rallies, quiz competition, seminars and interactive sessions between August 1 and 7 for promotion of breastfeeding. “Hundreds of infants become victims of various diseases due to a lack of strength in the body. Both infant and mother will be healthy only with breastfeeding. Unfortunately, many women are depending on cow milk and others to feed the baby. It is not correct,” he said.

Training

Senior paediatricians N.Vijay Kumar and K.Ravikumar urged doctors to promote mother’s milk among patients in their respective hospitals.

IAP Srikakulam wing treasurer V.Srirama Murthy and joint secretary K.Vinod said that Asha and Anganwadi workers were trained to carry out the message in all villages of the district. They said awareness programmes had been planned in nursing colleges too.
