School's sole student has two teachers to choose from

Staff Reporter

NELLORE: The primary school in Kotapalem girijan colony near Venkatagiri of Nellore district can lay claim to a `distinction'. It has one student and two teachers. Of course, in the attendance register, five students are `enrolled'. The colony, mostly inhabited by girijans has about 30 families who usually take their wards along with them for daily chores. The number of students has dropped drastically of late, and has culminated in this `singleton' status.

Incidentally, the idea of introducing food security scheme in the village has not occurred to the officials. None from the Education Department has visited the school.

`Better close down'

When the situation was brought to the notice of authorities recently, they reportedly suggested the closing down of the school instead of taking remedial measures. With the officials adopting a lukewarm attitude, the fate of the school as well as the sole student, not to mention the future of two teachers hangs in balance.
