KHAMMAM: The traffic in the busy court complex area was stalled for nearly two hours as a 19-year-old woman threatened to jump to death from the top of a cellular network tower on Thursday.

Identified as Chilaka Simabhanu of Palvancha town, she managed to reach the terrace of a private building on which the tower was erected around 12 noon and began climbing the tall structure holding the steel bars rather precariously.

People gathered in large numbers on the road, thus bringing the vehicular traffic to a standstill.

The woman who moved from pillar to post for justice in her fight against her in-laws staged the `feat' to draw the attention of the authorities.

Discarded by her husband and driven out from the family allegedly by her in-laws, the woman was said to be in an advanced stage of pregnancy. She lodged a complaint with the Palvancha police seeking action against the in-laws for demanding dowry.

Though the police acted against them, she found herself under pressure to compromise with the in-laws. She made all efforts for taking up her issue with the authorities concerned.

As she climbed the tower, the police and some members of the Bar assured her of help in her fight for justice. They appealed to her to restrain from any desperate step.

It took nearly one hour to pacify her. Khammam Sub-Divisional Police Officer R.S. Bhandari counselled her.

Vehicular traffic was cleared around 3 p.m. after two hours of high drama.
