Sequel to low-pressure area; revenue officials put on alert

HYDERABAD: Even while the water logging caused by the recent floods continues at a number of places in north coastal Andhra, heavy rain lashed the region on Thursday under the influence of a low-pressure area.

A fresh wet spell broke out in the region starting as drizzle and turning into a downpour in parts of Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts. Visakhapatnam area, however, experienced light showers.

Acting in abundant caution, the Government alerted revenue officials in all the nine coastal districts and asked them to be prepared for evacuation of people from low-lying areas.

"We are keeping a close watch on the weather system," said Disaster Management Commissioner Shashank Goel.

Meanwhile, the low-pressure area lay about 200-300 km off north Andhra-south Orissa coast on Thursday evening, holding out a threat to the State.

State Met Office director G. Sudhakara Rao said that there would be isolated heavy rain in the districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and East and West Godavari on Friday.

The South-West monsoon turned active over coastal Andhra.
