Greyhounds arrests 11 persons in Guntur

GUNTUR, MARCH. 17. The Greyhounds and special parties combing the Nallamalla forest area since the Chilakaluripet incident in Guntur district picked up 11 persons on Wednesday and Thursday from various places in the district, according to their relatives.

The police parties are believed to have picked up one person from Kunkalagunta, two from Durgi, three from Chenchu colony in Nagarjuna Sagar, two from Mellavagu in Bollapalli mandal and three from Macherla Chenchu colony.

At Macherla, relatives of two persons Yesu and Gyanamma, who were allegedly taken into custody by the police last night from Chenchu colony, held a rasta-roko from 1.30 p.m. to 6 p.m. seeking immediate release of all the three arrested. They lodged a complaint with the Macherla Circle Inspector.

The Circle Inspector said that he did not have any knowledge about the persons alleged to have been missing from the village. He told the villagers that he would find out the whereabouts of the three and come back to them. Large-scale movement of Greyhounds and special parties was witnessed in Siriguripadu, Bollapalli, Veldurthi, Bollapalli and Macherla areas. Police officials, however, did not confirm the picking up of villagers.

Meanwhile, the police and the district administration paid rich tributes to the persons killed by the Maoists in Chilakaluripet on Friday last. The Superintendent of Police, Jitender, and the Collector, G. Jayalakshmi, were present with relatives of the victims.

Combing in Kurnool

Our Staff Reporter from Kurnool writes: The police have reportedly launched massive combing operations in the Nallamala forest.

According to information, around 600 troops are involved in the operation launched from Prakasam, Mahabubnagar, Kurnool and Guntur. Most of the troops have been drawn from the Greyhounds and paramilitary units like the CRPF.

In Kurnool district, the operation commenced from Atmakur and Nandyal as headquarters and the troops are being commanded directly from Hyderabad.
