Gandhi memorial: plea for a reading room

Katragadda family had donated the land 20 years ago to build a memorial

VIJAYAWADA: The Gandhi Memorial Building Construction Committee, formed for development of a memorial to the Father of the Nation at the Current Baavi Park at Mughalrajapuram, on Saturday appealed to the Krishna district administration and the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) to construct a reading room in the 150 square yards of land there.

The committee, which met at Madhu Kala Mandapam, sent memorandums to this effect to District Collector Navin Mittal, Mayor Tadi Sakuntala and Municipal Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar.

Gandhi's speech

Committee convener Katragadda Narasaiah recalled that Mahatma Gandhi had addressed people at this site when he visited the city on December 16, 1933. Over 3,000 people had attended the meeting, where Gandhiji had lauded freedom fighter Katragadda Madhusudhana Rao, his wife Rama Tulasamma and mother Seethamma for creating awareness among people about the freedom struggle.
