Freshwater aquaculture committee to clear pending applications

The District Level Committee on freshwater aquaculture headed by Collector Buddha Prakash M Jyothi on Tuesday reviewed the process of regularising aqua ponds and receiving of applications from interested farmers to launch fresh water aquaculture. Mr. Buddha Prakash said that revenue officials should clear all the applications in order to speed up the process of sanctioning licence for new ponds.

“Farmers should apply to the Fisheries Department to register newly constructed ponds and also for the old ponds as per the guidelines of GO No. 7 released in April by including freshwater aquaculture as an allied part of agriculture,” said Mr. Buddha Prakash.

Fisheries Department Deputy Director T. Kalyanam said, “As many as 289 applications to construct new ponds are yet to be issued licence and revenue officials are inspecting the sites. Above 1,300 applications for regularisation of the old pond still need to be cleared by the District Level Committee in Krishna district.”

However, all these 1,300 applications were received from the farmers between 2010 and 2013 March. The District Level Committee on Tuesday decided to meet once again on May 9 to clear the possible number of applications without delaying the process. “Once giving licences to all types of freshwater aquaculture ponds is completed, the non-licensed ponds would be identified and necessary action initiated,” said Mr. Kalyanam.
