Three stations likely to come up

Rajahmundry: The Rajahmundry city, known as the cultural capital of Andhra, will soon have another feather in its cap with Frequency Modulation (FM) station coming up.

People of the city can listen different types of programmes from three major players who are going to establish their FM stations here. Moreover, it will give an opportunity for artistes, writers, singers and academicians to prove their talent.

Recently Prasara Bharati has called for tenders in the second phase of its expansion and listed 49 cities in the country to set up FM stations, keeping in view the grand success of Visakha FM, Radio Mirchi, Radio City, All India Radio's Rainbow FM in different places in the country. Rajahmundry is one among them and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has identified three players and called for sealed tenders.

Proposed stations

According to sources, the Union Government has listed Century FM (having tie-up with Reliance), Sun Net Work (Visakha FM) and Radio Mirchi (Times group) to establish their stations in Rajahmundry and Nellore.

Speaking to The Hindu , an official has said that it will take at least three months to set up the proposed radio stations and the initial investment will be between Rs.3 crores and Rs. 6 crores for each player. He has also said that the satellite-connected stations have to follow the specifications of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Three more in Vizag

Mayor M.S. Chakravarti has said that a few FM players met him in the first quarter of this year and RMC has to give no objection certificate for establishing their stations.

Visakhapatnam is also going to have three more FM stations -- Reliance, AIR Rainbow and Radio Mirchi very shortly.
