Engineering counselling put off; new dates soon

Students to be allowed to change colleges within eight weeks of beginning of academic year

HYDERABAD: The final phase of engineering counselling scheduled from October 1 has been postponed and is likely to be held after October 15.

The Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) Chairman, K.C. Reddy, said the decision has been taken for some administrative reasons. The new dates would be notified soon.

Officials said they had to postpone the counselling in view of the likely addition of another 4,950 seats for which the AICTE gave permission recently. Since most of these seats are in some preferred streams like biotechnology, ECE and computer sciences and that too in sought-after colleges, students stand to benefit.

Another reason being cited is the court case pending against new colleges sanctioned by the AICTE despite the Government's opposition. An appeal of the Government is pending in the court and the issue is likely to be settled in a couple of weeks.

Officials fear that if counselling is completed now, colleges would fill up seats on their own citing completion of counselling. Top students would lose an opportunity to pick up their choice of course in those colleges. "We want to make it the final counselling and that is the reason for postponement," said an official of APSCHE.

Regarding the confusion among students whether to join the allotted college now or wait for final counselling, officials said students can change their college within eight weeks of the beginning of the academic year.
