Encroachers galore on Wakf lands

HYDERABAD, AUG. 21. The Wakf Board Chairman, Mohd. Saleem, was in for some unpleasant surprises when he inspected some of the Wakf properties in the twin cities on Saturday.

The Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad has turned a piece of Wakf land, measuring 24 guntas, at Panja Bowli near Uppal Kalan into a dumping yard. Also, sand lorry owners found it a convenient spot to park their vehicles. Fearing that the land may be lost, Mr. Saleem decided to lease it out after obtaining permission from board members.

Another Wakf land measuring 35 guntas belonging to the Hazrath Abdullah Misri Shah Saheb dargah was found to be illegally occupied. Eviction notices has been served, but nothing happened. This was not all. Nearly 41 acres and 17 guntas of land belonging to the Qutub Shahi Masjid at Mansoorabad were occupied by the Forest Department. Mr. Saleem decided to lease the land left with the Board to poor Muslims on nominal rent, with the Board's approval.
