DTH by month-end: Prasar Bharati chief

TIRUPATI, AUG. 1. Prasar Bharati would be launching its Direct To Home (DTH) television cable network service before this month-end, said its Chief Executive, K.S. Sarma while participating in the concluding ceremony of the 11-day Thyagaraja Festival of Music and Dance at Tirupati.

Speaking on the occasion he said that though the earnings of the AIR and the Doordarshan registered a phenomenal increase in the last two years, they still needed to strengthen their financial position. He said that the corporation would be ready for a tie-up with music sabhas and cultural organisations to produce CDs and VCDs on concerts arranged by them. It was also ready to co-sponsor concerts, he added.

He felicitated noted Carnatic musicians, `Hyderabad Sisters'-- Lalitha and Haripriya -- on whom the Thyagaraja Committee conferred its title of "Saptagiri Sangeetha Vidvan Mani'' this year.

The president of the Festival Committee, Ajeya Kallam complimented the organisers for making Tirupati the musical hub of Andhra Pradesh. M.Krishnaswamy, president of the Thyagarajaswamy Temple Trust said that the trust had so far conferred the title on 38 artistes like M.S. Subbulakshmi, Semmangudi and Chembai .

Curtains came down on the fete with a scintillating concert by the Hyderabad Sisters later.
