KURNOOL: The police have busted an inter-State gang responsible for 23 dacoities in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Property worth Rs. 5 lakhs has been recovered. The value of articles stolen by the gang is estimated at Rs 50 lakhs.

Talking to reporters on Monday, Superintendent of Police B. Malla Reddy said efforts were on to recover the property in coordination with the police in neighbouring districts.

Looting spree

The gang comprised of Pala Laxminarayana and seven others who were known as Peddeti Gollas or Telegapamula gang who hailed from Guntur and Prakasam districts. The gang committed six offences in Kurnool city, 10 in Mahabubnagar district, two in Ananthapur, one each in Nizamabad, Ranga Reddy, Nalgonda and two in Raichur district. According to the SP, the gang went on a looting spree on alternate days moving from one town to the other. Additional SP Ch. Ravinder Reddy said the gang had an organised network and used mobile phones to contact each other. The assailants usually took on victims around midnight.

They used to mask their faces with mud or charcoal and enter the houses by breaking the doors with boulders. After collecting the valuables the gang would hide in isolated places and move out only after the hue and cry subsided.

Epicentre

The police pinpointed Mantralayam to be the epicentre where the gang was believed to have taken shelter after studying the pattern of its movements. Usually, they did not commit offences in towns where they took shelter.

The team led by Town Inspector M. Shivasankar Reddy nabbed the gang at Mantralayam.

The SP said the members of the gang, who led a lavish life, had set a target to commit 100 offences during the season. Three of them had escaped from police custody at Visakhapatnam and Warangal.

Seven more persons having links with the gang are absconding. The police have identified those who used to receive stolen property from the gang.

The police displayed the jewellery recovered from the gang at the district police office.
