`Custodial death': CPI for detailed probe

ANANTAPUR NOV. 10. The district unit of the Communist Party of India has alleged that the State Government is trying to cover up the facts in the Yadiki "custodial death" case. The probe being carried out by the CID is also trying to give a clean chit to the SI and other constables, it alleged.

Talking to newspersons here on Monday, the party leader and former MLA, Ramakrishna criticised the police for registering cases against villagers for "attack" on the police station, on the houses of the SI and the head constable and torching the vehicles parked on the police station premises. He demanded a probe into the case with a sitting judge, withdrawal of the cases booked against the villagers and payment of ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakhs to the family of Laxminarayana.

In their deposition before the AP State Human Rights' Committee the persons, who were in the police custody along with Laxminarayana, were also learnt to have explained that they were beaten up repeatedly in the custody, he said.
